What is underrun protection for, and why is it mandatory?
The task of rear underrun protection is to provide an abutment for the energy-absorbing area of the body of the vehicle running into it (the crumple zone), so that the energy of the collision can be dissipated. It is required by law under § 32b StVZO for motor vehicles, trailers and vehicles with exchangeable load carriers.
What does UN ECE R58/03 require, and how does the MF UFS G1 meet it?
The new requirements of UN ECE R58/03 for rear underrun protection on trucks and trailers are considerably stricter than those of earlier versions: the UNECE regulation R58-03 doubled the test forces from September 1, 2021, which means the new regulation also puts the frame structure itself under scrutiny. The demand for a design that saves weight and space remains, so construction, design and material combinations have to be rethought. The specially developed MF UFS G1 in steel-aluminum foam hybrid construction meets the new requirements of UN ECE R58/03.
